How to Write a Check Correctly in the US
Writing a check incorrectly can lead to payment delays, bank rejections, or even fraud. Follow these standard practices recognized by US banks (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo).
Golden Rules for Check Formatting
- Write cents as a fraction: If the amount is $1,250.75, write "One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty and 75/100". Even if it's a flat amount, always write "and 00/100" for security.
- Draw a line: After writing the amount in words, draw a horizontal line to the end of the field so no one can add extra words.
- Date Format: Use the standard MM/DD/YYYY format. Do not post-date checks unless explicitly agreed upon.
- Sign clearly: Your signature must match the one on file with your bank.
Use the converter tool at the top of this page to instantly generate the exact text you need to copy onto your checkbook. Select "Check" format to automatically append the fractional cents.
